The Doctor of Education Ed. in Transformational Leadership is a research-based program designed to prepare you for a leadership role in public and private schools, from kindergarten through high school and colleges and universities. The Doctor of Education is the highest degree focusing on the practice of education.


The Ed. program prepares educational leaders to transform learning communities; to create lasting school reform; to provide effective oversight of fiscal operations; to infuse new technologies into curricula; to empower teachers to collaborate and develop new ideas for excellence; to inspire lifelong learning among students and adults; to create standards for continuous improvement of diverse schools and communities; and to advance and produce research that contributes to the understanding of the complex process of education.


The credit program is uniquely structured from an interdisciplinary perspective. It is founded on the belief that critical issues in education can most fruitfully be explored using multiple points of view and methods: historical, psychological, doctor of education dissertation, philosophical, sociological, doctor of education dissertation, legal, financial, governmental, administrative, ethical and cultural.


This approach provides a rich environment in which theory and its practical applications are rigorously studied, scrutinized and analyzed through an understanding of the interactions between and among multiple fields and paradigms. Graduates of the Doctoral program in Education pursue careers as superintendents, principals, senior-level administrators, curriculum developers, policy analysts, and educational consultants; work in a wide variety of settings, such as public and non-public schools, state departments of education, national and state professional organizations, special education service units and private corporations; and become professors and researchers in colleges and universities.


Global Connections Students in the program will have the opportunity to spend a research summer or semester at the University of Salzburg School of Education in Austria to further diversify their understanding of education philosophy.


The doctorate is supported by international faculty who bring a wide range of interdisciplinary perspectives to the program. There is not a separate mission for doctor of education dissertation education and more traditional face-to-face education; the University views it only as one of the several tools to help it fulfill its core mission and ongoing Strategic Plan and Vision Statements.


LIU also views distance education as a means to help it further its global mission of making LIU opportunities available to a broader international audience. Personal Statement Write a statement describing your educational and professional goals and discuss what you hope to gain from doctoral study at Long Island University. Each incoming class enters the doctoral program as a cohort.


Cohorts begin each fall and consist of approximately 15 students each. Every cohort will travel together as an interdisciplinary group for the entire program. The cohort model of doctoral studies fosters interdisciplinary thinking by bringing together doctoral students with backgrounds in a variety of different fields.


The coursework provides expertise in a variety of perspectives, including organizational leadership and human relations, teaching and learning, professional development and training, doctor of education dissertation, educational technology, policy analysis, and data-informed decision making.


Students in the doctoral program are required to maintain registration every semester, until and including the term in which the dissertation is approved by the Doctoral Program faculty and the Dean of the College of Education, Information and Technology. The program does not lead to New York State certification. She is currently a Fulbright visiting professor at the University of Salzburg.


She is also a visiting professor at Aga Khan University as part of a Fulbright and will head up the center for Citizenship Studies at their International Educational School in Karachi, doctor of education dissertation, Pakistan.


For the year she was a visiting scholar in the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University. His research interests include the psychology of giftedness and special ability, as well as topics in brain and behavior including music perception, hand preference, and, most recently, sleep and cognition. Prior to LIU Post, Dr. Piro served as a teacher and administrator in the New York City Public Schools.
